Board Members Experience School Day at CIS

Cambridge City School District Board of Education members sampled a little taste of what students at the Cambridge Intermediate School experience each day during the Board of Education meeting Thursday night at CIS.

CIS Principal Laurie Goggin talks about the PAX Good Behavior Game with CCSD Board of Education Members.

Led by principal Laurie Goggin, several teachers taught board members a little bit of the language and math curriculum that is taught each day to the students. They also used student Chromebooks to try some of the computer pieces that the students use each day.

“We thought it would be a good idea for the board members to get an actual feel for the program and not just ‘hear’ about it,” Goggin said. “So we arranged for them to get a sample of what the students do each day to move forward on their learning paths.”

Teachers presenting math and ELA curriculum along with the popular PAX program were Shawna Winland, third grade intervention specialist; Bethany Tuttle, third grade math teacher; Angie Hayhurst, third grade intervention specialist; Skylar Flinn, fourth grade ELA teacher; Abby Knott, fifth grade math teacher; and Kirstin Carpenter, fifth grade math teacher.

“Our teachers, administrators and staff members work extremely hard to provide a high-quality educational experience for our students each day,” Cambridge Superintendent Dan Coffman said. “I don’t know that many people outside of the school buildings realize how much time and effort goes into preparing and teaching a single lesson. All of our teachers, not just the ones here tonight, are dedicated educators who care so much about the students they teach.

“It was good for the board members to get a personal glimpse of what our students experience every day,” Coffman added.

In other business, the board approved a change 2023-2024 student master calendar to reflect a calamity day on Monday, April 8, 2024. This is the day the solar eclipse will be visible in Ohio. It is considered one of the celestial highlights of the century. A large portion of the state will be plunged into darkness in the middle of the day as the moon passes between the earth and sun.

The last total solar eclipse in Ohio happened in 1806, and the next one will not happen until 2099.

“The actual solar eclipse is predicted to happen in the afternoon after school would be dismissed,” Superintendent Dan Coffman said. “The administration, however, felt it was important to give students, their families, and our staff members and teachers who are so inclined, the opportunity to plan educational outings to view this once in a lifetime phenomenon.”

Also, the board approved an overnight trip for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) organization to the Ohio FCCLA State Leadership Conference at the Ohio Expos Center in Columbus; approved the 2024-2025 student handbook and the 2024-2025 Preschool handbook; approved a memorandum of understanding with Muskingum University for students to enroll in College Credit Plus courses.
